Description
St. Francis Embracing Christ on canvas | By Murillo
Experience one of the most moving depictions of St. Francis of Assisi and Jesus Christ in this historic masterpiece by Spanish Baroque painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.
Painted around 1668–1669, Saint Francis Embracing Christ depicts an extraordinary moment of Franciscan devotion: Christ releases one arm from the Cross and reaches down to embrace St. Francis, while Francis turns away from the material world and gives himself completely to Christ.
At St. Francis's feet is a globe representing the material world. Francis pushes it away with his foot, symbolizing his renunciation of worldly possessions and his decision to follow Christ. Nearby angels hold a book referring to Luke 14:33, reinforcing the painting's message of surrender and discipleship.
Murillo created the painting as part of a group of works for the Capuchin convent in Seville, centered on Franciscan spirituality. Today, the original is preserved in the Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla in Spain.
This canvas reproduction brings that powerful imagery into the home and is especially meaningful for a prayer room, home altar, study, parish, Franciscan community, Catholic office, or traditional Christian interior.
A thoughtful Catholic gift for Franciscans, priests, religious, St. Francis devotees, Catholic families, Confirmation recipients, and anyone drawn to the spirituality of surrender, humility, and love of Christ.
